News and Announcements: NYC Conference on Queer Survival Economies

BY ON January 6, 2015

Conference: Invisible Lives, Targeted Bodies: Impacts of Economic Injustice on LGBTQ Communities, January 23-24, 2015, Murphy Institute, CUNY Grad Center, New York. Sponsored by the Barnard Center for Research on Women.

As part of the ongoing Queer Survival Economies project spearheaded by Amber Hollibaugh, this conference works to make visible queer economic realities and survival strategies. Tracks and sessions will include queer perspectives within poor and low-income communities, immigration, the state, and transnational flows of labor; the invisibility of the many queer people working in industries like retail; the impact of sexual identities in the workplace, restaurants, or health care that offer long hours, low wages, and very few workplace protections; and gender, sexuality, HIV status, drug risk, and an expansive vision of reproductive justice and health. Together, we will develop the groundwork for an intellectual framework and research agenda on economic justice that engages queer people and communities.
