New and Noteworthy Books

BY ON March 6, 2015

Continuing Women’s History Month, here are a few titles you might like to get familiar with:

New York: Grove Press

  • Irvine Welsch, The Sex Lives of Siamese Twins (New York: Knopf Doubleday, 2015). A novel about a Miami Beach personal-fitness trainer named Lucy, who makes the transition from hero to villain as an act of vigilantism later reveals itself to have saved rather than caught the supposed criminals. A depressed and overweight witness to the incident, Lena, befriends Lucy, and the two find themselves more dependent on each other than they would have thought.
  • Helen Macdonald, H Is for Hawk (New York: Grove Press, 2015). A memoir accounting grief and bereavement, the book notably offers an interesting parallel narrative/allusion to closeted author T. H. White, famed creator of The Once and Future King. Besides, this one won the Samuel Johnson Prize.

  • Barney Frank, Frank: A Life in Politics from the Great Society to Same-Sex Marriage (New York: Macmillan, March 17th, 2015). The political memoir of perhaps America’s most prominent gay politician. Gay, Jewish, New Jerseyan co-sponsor of Dodd-Frank. What’s not to like?

  • And, last but not least, Hilary Owen and Anna M. Klobucka Gender, Empire, and Postcolony: Luso-Afro-Brazilian Intersections (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). A collection of essays analyzing the literature, cinema and other visual arts of Portuguese colonialism and Lusophone postcolonialism with perspectives from postcolonial and gender theory.
