Give Us Your Latte! The OutHistory Fundraiser

BY ON December 26, 2014

Santa_Starbucks_CupCould you agree to give us the money you spend on one cup of coffee every month? Because that’s what we need from you. As 2014, if you have not yet given all the money you want to give this year, please think of us.

As a volunteer co-director for OutHistory.org with Jonathan Ned Katz (our founder) and John D’Emilio, I give my time. So do several dozen bloggers, editors and interns. However, because OutHistory.org is free and takes no advertising, we need money too: there are server fees, designer fees, and expenses for starting new projects.

OutHistory.org is the first history website dedicated to documenting an LGBT past, and we want it to be for everyone, with no subscriber fees, no cookies and no ads. In addition to exhibits where we often publish previously unavailable documents and images for free, we have made some big improvements this: launching a new blog that keeps you updated (with special Wednesday posts from Co-Director John D’Emilio); becoming a project of the Fund for the City of New York; developing an internship program with the Humanities Action Lab at The New School; and devising a social media strategy that gets the news out. Our talented web designer, Carl Foote, has helped us develop new pages, updating and troubleshooting the old one. We are writing grants (thank you, Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation!) to fund a teaching resource that will make documents, oral histories and essays about the history of ACT UP and HIV-AIDS available for high school and college teachers.

2014 has also seen new scholars joining the project, as bloggers, editors, and writers of exhibits, and we hope more of you will join us in 2015. Whether you write for us or not, the best thing that you can do to help support us, and help us raise money through foundation grants and  major donors, is to donate here through our page at New York Charities. Donations, no matter how small, show that OutHistory.org has a community that supports the site.

Best of all, you don’t have to give us your money all at once: you can sign up for a recurring donation of as little as $5.00 a month.

It’s the cost of just one cup of coffee! Happy New Year, everyone.
