Don’t you want order this book immediately?

Because OutHistory blog doesn’t stop in the summer, keep checking for news items, announcements, and fun reads. On our desk this week:

  • Yes It Happens in Our Community:  go here for an account of what happened when a group of Latina lesbians presented Mexican government-issued ID to gain entrance to a Chicago Pride event on June 16. A white bouncer ejected them, but that’s only part of the story. Racist gatekeeping been going on for decades at queer bars and dance parties: our brothers and sisters of color are asked to present multiple forms of ID, or have the ID they do present rejected, as a normal strategy by white owners and dance party hosts to maintain segregation. When are major civil rights organizations planning to confront the LGBT business interests which, among other things, now operate June pride events everywhere?
  • Fun with Journals: The new issue of American Quarterly (June 2015), the journal of the American Studies Association contains the Presidential address from last fall’s Los Angeles meeting by outgoing ASA President Lisa Duggan: responses are by Cynthia G. Franklin, Eng-Beng Lim, and Scott L. Morgenson.
  • Not that There’s Anything Wrong with That: Jane Ward’s Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men (NYU Press, 2015).  Also out this month is Peter Piot’s AIDS Between Science and Politics (Columbia, 2015); volumes 5 and 6 of Edward Mendelssohn, Ed. The Complete Works of W.H. Auden (Princeton University Press, 2015); and Brian Hoffman’s Naked: A Cultural History of American Nudism (NYU Press, 2015.)
