In our tireless effort to archive things that are happening now, or that are relevant to our queer past, we offer these news clips:
- Linking global public health concerns about the Ebola virus to the history of homophobia, racism and xenophobia that marked the emergence of AIDS in the 1980s, ACT UP New York celebrated Halloween by demonstrating against mandator quarantines for health workers returning from the affected nations in West Africa. According to MSNBC, nearly 100 activists “marched up the east side of Manhattan to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s offices in order to express fears that policies like mandatory quarantines and travel bans could exacerbate the current health crisis.” Read the full story here. ACT UP-NY meetings are on 7:30 every Monday evening at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th Street, NY, NY.
- The Windy City News reports that fifteen individuals will be inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, including University of Illinois – Chicago’s Associate Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies Jennifer Brier. Brier, a historian of AIDS who also hold an appointment in UIC’s history department, is being honored for her 11 years of publicly engaged historical practice. Brier’s achievements include the co-curation of a major exhibit in 2011, “Out in Chicago,” at the Chicago History Museum. She is also a co-chair of the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History, an affiliate of the American Historical Association, and the Acting Director of WGS at UIC.
