The Philadelphia Story: More Oral Histories Up @ OutHistory

BY ON December 1, 2014

I am pleased to announce that Outhistory.org now features a new set of oral history transcripts from the Philadelphia LGBT History Project. I conducted the interviews in 1993-1997 as part of my research for City of Sisterly and Brotherly Loves: Lesbian and Gay Philadelphia, 1945-1972, which was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2000 and in a second edition (with a new introduction) by Temple University Press in 2004. There are now sixteen visually-enhanced transcripts posted and there are plans to upload additional transcripts in the future. The interviews feature nationally prominent activists Barbara Gittings, Kay Lahusen, and Kiyoshi Kuromiya; local movement leaders Jack Adair, Ada Bello, Joan Fleischmann, “Joey” Hardman, “Mark Kendall,” and Harry Langhorne; and a diverse set of other individuals who speak about LGBT lives and queer cultures from the 1940s through the 1970s.
