What We’re Reading — On the Beach

Truman Capote at the beach

Truman Capote at the beachBarney Frank,  (New York: Farrar, Strauss, Giroux, 2015).  (June 4, 2014).

  • Barney Frank, Frank: A Life in Politics (New York: Farrar, Strauss, Giroux, 2015). Read a review by Gary Wills in the New York Review of Books (June 4, 2014).
  • Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts (Minnesota: Graywolf Press, 2015). Not exactly beach reading unless you are a historian, and then everything else is beach reading. A review in The Guardian is here.
  • Nell Zink, Mislaid: A Novel (New York: HarperCollins, 2015). He’s gay, she’s a lesbian, and they’re married to each other in the 1960’s — what could go wrong?
  • Mary Renault, The Bull from the Sea (New York: Vintage, 1962). An oldie, right? Totally camp, right? But I’m on the beach in Greece! If you are getting all misty about those teenage  summer days spent making much of Renault’s not so hidden homophilia, you might also want to read Daniel Mendelsohn’s “The American Boy,” an account of his teenage correspondence with the author (The New Yorker, January 7, 2013.)
